My most recent articles are:
- The OneTouch UltraMini
LifeScan promotes its new OneTouch UltraMini meter for people with diabetes who don’t have health insurance coverage. It’s that inexpensive. But my guess is that even more people will use it as a second meter to carry in their purse or pocket. It’s that small. My article originally appeared in the December 2006-January 2007 issues of Diabetes Health, and Diabetes Health Professional, and is now also online here.
- David Mendosa’s Diabetes Blog
Each month I describe and link my new blog articles here. But there is an easier way to find all of my blog articles since October 2005.The easiest way to read this and any blog is to use a blog reader. I use Bloglines, as I describe in my blog article, “Reading Health Blogs.”
- My New Diabetes Blog Articles
HealthCentral.com published nine of my new diabetes blog articles in January:- New dHealth Monitoring Tool. The brand new dHealth Network really does make health management easy, as it claims. It is especially for people with diabetes. Unlike lots of programs where you can track only your blood glucose, the dHealth Network makes it fast and easy to track our progress with everything that we measure, including our weight, steps taken, and blood pressure. It’s also important to mention that using dHealth Network is free.
- Diabetes Web Search. Now we have and reliable new way to search for diabetes information on the Web, thanks to Elizabeth Zabell and David Edelman on their new blog. Their Diabetes Web Search searches more than 250 of the most relevant diabetes non-profits, government sites, pharmaceuticals, and blogs.
- Diabetes, Weight, and Bugs. Maybe the fault of being overweight isn’t in the stars. But it may well be in our bugs.
- Meet Your Set Point. Our bodies tend to reach its set point between weight and energy expenditure. Scientists call this homeostasis. We call it the set point.
- The Non-Invasive Problem. The big problem with non-invasive blood glucose monitors is that there aren’t any. Here’s why.
- Faking It. The strange thing is that if we look at the up side of our life, we have a much better chance of controlling our diabetes and avoid its complications than when we are pessimistic. This is no longer just theory. Here’s the proof.
- How Much Vitamin D? Vitamin D seems to protect us from many problems. But until now the real question was how much that we can safely take. A new study goes a long way toward answering this question.
- The Sleep Apnea-Diabetes Connection. Just like diabetes, we can control sleep apnea. Here’s how.
- Treating Sleep Apnea. Whether you have diabetes or sleep apnea — or both conditions — you need to become an advocate for your own treatment. Here’s something to advocate for.
- New dHealth Monitoring Tool.
This month
Diabetes Update features an important new book about the development of non-invasive blood glucose meters. Published here for the first time, this book is the contribution of the leading authority on these devices, John L. Smith. He is the former CEO of Fovioptics and earlier the chief scientific officer of LifeScan. In a 24-year career he professionally evaluated more than 100 non-invasive meter technologies. John kindly authorized me to make his book available here. If you have any questions about the book after reading it, please address them to me. The URL is

Survey Help:
-
Michael Hill from City University, London, is currently collecting data on how
computers can assist in monitoring diabetes management, in particular blood
glucose.
Academic research into the development of computer systems to support the management of diabetes has been taking place for over two decades now. A large number of systems have been developed, performing tasks ranging from storing blood glucose readings and plotting graphs of them, to providing advice on insulin dose adjustment.
As there is not much information available on how these systems are used by patients or health care professionals, Michael Hill is conducting a survey. If you would like to take part in this survey, please visit the following address: http://www.soi.city.ac.uk/~abbg285/usage.html
