My most recent articles are:

  • David Mendosa’s Diabetes Blog
The Health Central Network hosts my blog about diabetes at http://www.healthcentral.com/diabetes/c/17/. This is where you can find most of my new articles.

Health Central completely redesigned the site on March 1. Among the many improvements is an easy way to see the entire article at once. This “single page” view gives you an uncluttered look at my articles. The links below are to this view. And if you go into the site in a different way, like through a blog reader, you get to the single page view by clicking on the “print page” button at the bottom of each article or the “Printer friendly” button at the bottom of the right sidebar.

Each month I describe and link my new blog articles here. But there is an easier way to find all of my blog articles since October 2005.

The easiest way to read this and any blog is to use a blog reader. I use Bloglines, as I describe in my blog article, “Reading Health Blogs.

  • My New Diabetes Blog Articles
So far I have written more than 150 articles about all aspects of diabetes there. In April HealthCentral.com published eight of my new diabetes blog articles:

  1. My Style. I am certainly not style conscious in what I wear. Like a lot of Westeners, the trousers I prefer and wear every day are blue jeans. My writing style is just as simple.

  2. Why and How to Eat Local. Please join me in getting the store where you buy your food to offer more produce from local farmers. We need the freshness of locally grown fruit and vegetables not only for the environment but more directly for our nutrition.

  3. Tributes to Catherine. So many of you sent condolences upon the death of my wife Catherine from complications of diabetes on March 20. Here is my collective response.

  4. Keep Off the Weight. New research shows that we need at least seven hours of exercise a week, and maybe even more to sustain weight loss. I do it on the trail.

  5. Checking Blood Pressure at Home. People with diabetes know that we are responsible for controlling it. We can't leave it to the doctors. That's especially true with checking our blood pressure.

  6. Less Meter is More. All but one of the major meter makers now offer a blood glucose meter that doesn’t require coding. If you ever forgot to code (or calibrate) your meter, you will understand why.

  7. AGEs Aren’t Just for the Aged. For many people to eat foods than are low in advanced glycation end products (AGEs) can be daunting. But it is worth it for our health and is a goal to move toward, not one that most of us can achieve immediately.

  8. Making Better Muffins. Food that is both delicious and healthy for those of us with diabetes is all too rare. But here is something exceptional.

Books:

  • Dr. Ludwig just wrote me, “I am publishing a book on childhood obesity that features a low glycemic load diet, together with parenting tips, a 9-week family program and recipes.” His book, which he wrote with Suzanne Rostler M.S., R.D., is Ending the Food Fight: Guide Your Child to a Healthy Weight in a Fast Food/Fake Food World. The URL is http://www.endingthefoodfight.com/.

  • Sue Schmitt also just wrote me about her book about children, Even Superheroes Get Diabetes. It is for children ages 5 to 9 and focuses on the gift within the illness. It is the story of a boy named Kelvin who loves superheroes. His childhood days are spent in imaginative play. One day, his fantasies are marred by the reality of getting diabetes, the incessant finger pricks, shots, and the constant doctor’s appointments. When a mysterious doctor uncovers that Kelvin has superpowers, the story reveals itself as the genesis of a new kind of superhero. Kelvin uses his superpowers to help other kids with diabetes. Illustrations by Micah Chambers-Goldberg connects both children and parents to the world of diabetes. The URL is http://www.evensuperheroes.com, and the book will be available for purchase at the online store on that site after May 15.
