Diabetes Update 107: Avandia Anxiety

By David Mendosa

My most recent articles are:

  • My Diabetes Articles at Health Central
The Health Central Network hosts my articles about diabetes at http://www.healthcentral.com/diabetes/c/17/. This is where you can find most of my new articles.

The HealthCentral Network continues to get better and better. It will now notified you by email of new articles (SharePosts) by me or anyone who posts at HealthCentral.com. Just click on "Subscribe" wherever you see that button there. The new software also now permits threaded replies to comments. So you will see more replies from me than I have posted since the major site revamp on March 1.

Each month I describe and link my new Health Central articles here. But you can also use a blog reader to keep up with my articles. I use Bloglines, as I describe in my article, “Reading Health Blogs.

  • My New Diabetes Articles for Health Central
So far I have written more than 170 articles for Health Central about all aspects of diabetes. In May they published nine of my new diabetes articles:
    1. Avandia Anxiety. Should you stop taking Avandia or Avandamet or Avandaryl now that one of the country’s leading cardiologists says that Avandia has an increased risk of heart attack or death? Here are the facts that you need to consider.

    2. A is for Accuracy. I have just switched to the most accurate blood glucose meter we can buy. Agamatrix makes this meter, and they call it the WaveSense KeyNote.

    3. B is for Byetta. At first I couldn’t decide whether B was for Byetta or for better. Then I realized that it didn’t matter, because Byetta is better. But I have been thinking more generally about better and the new book of that title. Better: A Surgeon’s Notes on Performance is the wonderful new book by Atul Gawande.

    4. C is for Cure. The four-letter word in diabetes is “cure.” We are a long way from having one, but that doesn’t stop the scammers from separating us from our money and endangering our health.

    5. D is for Drugs. Of all the different types of drugs that we all take in this modern society, dietary supplements  —  which many of us don’t even think of as drugs  —  are the most insidious. Here’s why.

    6. E is for Exercise. Some addictions, like exercise, are good for us. I never imagined that I would get addicted to it, but I am. It’s no longer something that I think I should do. It’s something that I want to do.

    7. F is for Failure. There’s a lot of buzz over a new report out of Hong Kong about a non-invasive blood glucose meter. But it won’t work.

    8. G is for Gardening. I want to make sure that I can get locally grown food to provide the nutrition I need. So, I’m starting to garden. How local can you get?

    9. H is for Hypo. We all know that we what to avoid hypoglycemic episodes. But do we know which ones of our diabetes drugs besides insulin can cause them? If not, you might want to read on.
