  • My New Diabetes Articles for Health Central
    So far I have written more than 190 articles for Health Central about all aspects of diabetes. In July they published nine of my new diabetes articles:
    1. Meter Activity Recognition. For years I’ve recommended to the meter manufacturers that they include activity recognition in their testing options. Now some companies are beginning to do just that.

    2. Michael Moore's Sicko. Sicko is a brilliant piece of one-sided liberal reporting. It is about the failure of the American health care system, which is sicker than we are.

    3. First-Phase Insulin. First-phase insulin release is one of the first things that people with diabetes lose. In healthy people our bodies release insulin within 10 minutes after eating. Now new injectable drugs, new insulins, and new pills can restore it.

    4. Children with Diabetes at Disney World. The gathering of more than 2,500 families of children with diabetes at Disney World near Orlando, Florida, was an eye-opener for me. These children and their parents are different in several ways.

    5. Additional Avandia Anxiety. The bad news about Avandia really isn’t bad after all. That’s because we have much better medications that we can use to control our diabetes.

    6. Exercise and Inflamation. Now researchers have found that a high exercise level  —  but not a moderate one  — reduces our risk of heart disease, the most common complication of diabetes.

    7. Glycemic Variability. It’s beginning to appear that a low A1C level isn’t enough to control the complications of diabetes. It’s turning out that the quality of our A1C matters as much as it’s quantity.

    8. Maintaining Weight . I can only think of one thing that’s harder to do than to lose weight. It’s keeping that weight off. Now that I am down to my goal, I face that supreme challenge. If you have been a successful loser, please share how you do it!

    9. Continuous Testing: First Impressions. Whether it’s high-tech equipment or people, first impressions can be crucial. And continuous glucose monitors are the most high tech of anything that those of us with diabetes can get. My first impressions of my new Guardian REAL-Time proclaim it to be a steady date.

  Talking about Diabetes Survey:

  Although many people have diabetes, very little is known about the everyday talks we have about diabetes with friends or family. Talking can be important because it’s part of what makes us feel more, or sometimes even less, supported or understood by others.

  This research study by Cat McGrew, a doctoral candidate in Ohio State University’s School of Communication, is hoping to learn more about all of this. Cat is conducting a confidential online survey about people’s experiences in talking about diabetes.

  “I'm seeking people over 18 years old with type 1 or type 2 diabetes to participate,” Cat tells me. “We’re interested in the views of someone WITH diabetes AND of a close friend, family member, or spouse. This will help us understand how the other person feels when talking about diabetes too. Either person can take the survey, even if the other one doesn’t. This research is being conducted as part of my doctoral dissertation, and has been reviewed and approved by my university. If you wish, I’ll send you a summary of the results once it’s completed.”
