- Blogging
I have joined the burgeoning ranks of bloggers. A company called Choice Media — which owns Health Central, DrKoop.com, HealthScout, and hundreds of other health websites — asked me to write its type 2 diabetes blog. All I have to do is send them two articles a week and they code it — much easier than having to both write and code this Diabetes Update newsletter. My new blog will affect this newsletter. Much of what I previously included in my newsletter will be in my blog. But the newsletter will have links to my blog entries.
The newsletter will continue to function as a way for you to learn about new and updated articles that I have written for my website and other websites and magazines that I write for as well as my blog. But I plan for the newsletter to become shorter in the future. I think that it has been too long anyway for most people to read anyway.
The blog focuses more on news for people with type 2 diabetes and less on serving as an introduction to my website. All this is to encourage you to read my blog as well. The blog doesn’t yet have a way for you to subscribe to it with a news aggregator, but you can, of course, read it with any browser.
So far these items are online:
- Adding Substance to the Glycemic Index at http://blogs.healthcentral.com/diabetes/david-mendosa/adding-substance-to-the-glycemic-index-2005-10-12. This item is about Derek Paice’s “Substance Glycemic Index.”
- Worst Pills at http://blogs.healthcentral.com/diabetes/david-mendosa/worst-pills-2005-10-12. This is essentially the same article as in last month’s newsletter.

- The Banting Homestead at http://blogs.healthcentral.com/diabetes/david-mendosa/the-banting-homestead-2005-11-09. The doctor who gave us insulin, Frederick Banting, was born on a farm in Alliston, Ontario, Canada, in 1891. That homestead is wasting away, like people with type 1 diabetes did before he came along.
- Scams and Quacks at http://blogs.healthcentral.com/diabetes/david-mendosa/scams-and-quacks-2005-11-09. This is essentially the same article as in last month’s newsletter.
- How Frequently Should You Test? at http://blogs.healthcentral.com/diabetes/david-mendosa/1370-2005-11-18. If you don’t use insulin, it hasn’t been clear that you need to check your blood glucose. It is now.
- When is the Best Time of Day to Test? at http://blogs.healthcentral.com/diabetes/david-mendosa/when-is-the-best-time-of-day-to-test-2005-11-18. The answer to the question of when to test depends on the answer to another question: Is your diabetes under control or not.
- Your Schedule at http://blogs.healthcentral.com/diabetes/david-mendosa/your-schedule-2005-11-27. A big part of taking care of ourselves is to schedule the tests and check-ups that we regularly need.
- Barley Cereal at http://blogs.healthcentral.com/diabetes/david-mendosa/barley-cereal-2005-11-27. I eat a great barley cereal that is perfect for people with diabetes.
- Alternative Therapies for Diabetes at http://blogs.healthcentral.com/diabetes/david-mendosa/alternative-therapies-for-diabetes-2005-11-27. The Natural Health Encyclopedia has the most reliable information on alternative therapies.
- Which Brands Contain What They Claim? at http://blogs.healthcentral.com/diabetes/david-mendosa/which-brands-contain-what-they-claim-2005-11-27. The real challenge is to find the right brand of herbs or dietary supplements for diabetes at the best price.
- Adding Substance to the Glycemic Index at http://blogs.healthcentral.com/diabetes/david-mendosa/adding-substance-to-the-glycemic-index-2005-10-12. This item is about Derek Paice’s “Substance Glycemic Index.”
- Counting Calories
You can count the calories that you eat and you can count those that you use in exercise. The difference is simply whether you gain or lose weight. But it’s not easy to count those that you use without a little help. Nowadays, fortunately, that help is all around us in all sorts of calorie-counting gadgets. Please read my article, “The Calorie-Counting Revolution” in the November 2005 issue of Diabetes Wellness News or read it on my website at http://www.mendosa.com/counting_calories.htm - The Sidekick Meter
The Sidekick meter is not only the world’s smallest diabetes testing system, but also one of the easiest to use. The Sidekick also carries a small price. Perhaps its most remarkable feature is that this is the first disposable meter. For my full article about this meter please read my current “Meter News” column in the December issue of Diabetes Health magazine or read it on my website at http://www.mendosa.com/sidekick.htm.
Book Reviews:

Low GI Eating Made Easy
- Low GI Eating Made Easy
I have read so many books on the glycemic index that I moaned when this one came in last week’s mail. I have more than 30 books about the glycemic index on my bookshelves, and I have read them all. What more, after all, is there to say about it?
It turns out that while there really is not that much new information in this book, it is organized just the way people are crying for it. People are always asking me for glycemic index information about common American foods — beyond those that I list at http://www.mendosa.com/common_foods.htm. Now, if you are one of those people, this is just what you have been asking for.
It you haven’t read anything about the glycemic index, this is a great way to start. Highly recommended.
Marlowe & Company in New York is publishing The New Glucose Revolution Low GI Eating Made Easy today. By Dr. Jennie Brand-Miller and Kaye Foster-Powell with Philippa Sandall, this 264-page trade paperback lists for $12.95. The ISBN is 1-56924-385-9.
