Diabetes Update 91: An Uncommon Doctor

  • My Diabetes Blog
My new blog entries for January are:
    • Tracking Your Diabetes Numbers. Anyone who likes gadgets will fall in love with the Track3. We can use it to keep track of not only the calories we consume but also how many we burn when we exercise. We can also use it to log our blood glucose readings and the insulins or oral medications that we take.

    • Three Great Appetizers. There must be many tasty appetizers, but I can think of three that taste wonderful to me. Here are the recipes or brands for the best salsa, guacamole, and hummus.

    • Special Kitchen Tools. We all need special tools to work with onions, garlic, chilies, and ginger. I have recommendations for the first three.

    • Our Double Bind. Almost all everyone with type 2 diabetes is overweight and needs to take insulin or oral medication. That insulin and oral medication usually makes us gain even more weight. But there are some newer drugs that don’t.

    • Allergic to Medicine. If you are allergic to the insulin or other medicine that your doctor prescribes, it is not just disconcerting. It can be life-threatening.

    • Eating Solo. Solo bars are probably the lowest glycemic that you can get. And all four flavors taste great.

    • Not Fat Enough. Not everyone with diabetes is overweight. Some of us need to eat foods that will make us gain weight. This blog entry discusses the two types of foods that are both healthy and will lead to weight gain.

    • Five Random Facts about Me. Diabetes bloggers are playing tag. My friend Bill Quick tagged me. According to the rules of this game, my job is to list five obscure facts about myself, which you can read here. That done, I have tagged my friend Kelly Close.

    • Exubera Exuberance. The manufacturers of Exubera, the first inhaled insulin to be approved, are exuberant. But will people with diabetes feel the same way if their health insurance company doesn’t cover it?

  • Probing Our Feet
“There Ain’t No Such Thing As A Free Lunch,” says my favorite science fiction author, Robert A. Heinlein. So the disposable probes (sometimes called monofilaments) that the U.S. government will give you at no cost are not exactly free. Your taxes paid for them. But if you accept the offer, it won’t cost you anything more, and it could save you pain and money. This article originally appeared in the January 2006 issue of Diabetes Wellness News and is on my website at Probing Our Feet.

  • Potato lovers awake! Just because baked Russet Burbank potatoes are so high glycemic, you don’t have to forsake all potatoes. New research gives us new hope. See http://www.mendosa.com/cold_potatoes.htm

  • HemoCue is Coming
We have been waiting a long time for a really accurate and precise meter. It’s almost here, and it’s called the HemoCue Monitor. My article originally appeared in the February 2006 issue of Diabetes Health and is now also online here.

Dr. Joe

  • An Uncommon Doctor

This is an uncommon book about an uncommon doctor. One of the ways in which the book is different is because it is divided almost equally between Dr. Joe Prendergast the person and Dr. Joe’s endocrinology practice.
