A hexane extract of the fruit of S. repens (PA-109; Permixon) was evaluated in a placebo controlled trial in 110 outpatients with benign prostatic hyperplasia. Drug therapy was found to be more effective than placebo therapy based on subjective and objective signs. (7 references)

Qualitative identification of the constituents of a hexane extract from the fruits of Serenoa repens is described, based on GC, NMR and MS analysis. Compounds playing a role in the activity of the extract in functional disorders related to prostate hypertrophy were identified as beta-sitosterol, stigmasterol, campesterol, hexacosanol, octacosanol, triacontanol and cycloartenol.
